The work of the Regional Focal Point is guided by the Regional Action Plan, which seeks to support the region’s scientific community and foster impactful collaborations for a sustainable future.

The plan is dedicated to four essential scientific domains:

  1. Science and biodiversity as a regional priority for global sustainability, addressing biodiversity’s role in resilience and ecosystem health;
  2. Interdisciplinary collaboration in the digital age, promoting cross-disciplinary partnerships to leverage digital advancements;
  3. Science for policy and science advice, enhancing evidence-based decision-making
  4. Science education and research infrastructure, focusing on robust scientific literacy and institutional support.

Through these focus areas, the RFP aims to co-create regionally informed strategies with the local scientific community.

Engaging a wide range of stakeholders and fostering partnerships across academia, government, non-governmental organizations and the private sector, the RFP’s efforts are structured around collaborative activities. These include aligning agendas, allocating resources, and hosting knowledge-sharing events. Through formal partnerships, international exchanges, and sustainable funding initiatives, the Regional Action Plan advances science as a driver for collective resilience and regional progress.

Operational committees

To achieve the ambitious goals set out in the Regional Action Plan, the RFP invites members of the ISC community to join its newly established operational committees. These committees will play a crucial role in advancing the ISC’s mission in the region by fostering collaboration, strengthening regional capacity, and addressing pressing scientific and policy challenges.

  • Fundraising and membership: Mobilizing resources, building partnerships, and engaging ISC Members to sustain ISC RFP-LAC activities.
  • Science policy & freedom and responsibility in science: Strengthening science-policy dialogues, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and advocating for scientific freedom and responsibility.
  • Communications: Developing strategies to enhance visibility, amplify success stories, and foster regional dialogue.
  • Partnerships: Facilitating cross-border collaborations through science diplomacy, open science, and regional missions.
  • Capacity-building and events: Designing and implementing training programs, workshops, and events to empower researchers and institutions.
