After the World Health Organization called the global pandemic an ‘infodemic’, the summit provided an opportunity to hear from experts on the role journalism can play in countering misinformation during times of crisis. Journalists and editors participated in four sessions on how to bolster their evidence-based journalism to ensure coverage is accurate and valuable for the citizens they serve.
ISC Member the Australian Academy of Science presented a case study for the session ‘Specialist Skills: how to boost newsroom expertise whatever your budget’ to assist newsrooms affected by budgetary restrictions that cut back on specialist science and health reporters.
The outcome of the summit was a new handbook for journalists, Journalism in the Age of Pandemics: A guidebook.
