The International Science Council (ISC) is a major non-governmental organization with a unique global membership of over 220 bodies, including international scientific unions and associations and national and regional scientific organizations such as academies and research councils. Created in 2018 as the result of a merger between two long-standing organizations, the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the ISC is the largest global science organization of its type and the only such bringing together the natural and social sciences.

The ISC convenes the scientific expertise and resources needed to lead on catalysing, incubating, and coordinating impactful international action on issues of major scientific and public importance. The ISC’s activities fall into three principal areas of work: science-for-policy; policy-for-science; and scientific freedom and responsibility. With a broad range of co-sponsored international research programmes, networks, and committees, the ISC’s activities span a broad range of issues, from global sustainability, inequality, urban health and wellbeing and disaster risk reduction, to data, observing systems, and science advice to governments.

The ISC is now seeking to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization through its next stage of development. Reporting to the President and Governing Board, the CEO will lead the development and delivery of a compelling shared vision for the future of the ISC, enhancing its profile and maximizing its impact. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced leader to play an important and highly visible role in the continued development of the ISC and the delivery of its mission and vision.

The ideal candidate will bring demonstrable strategic and operational leadership experience gained in a complex organization of comparable scale, together with the credibility and gravitas to engage and influence across the diversity of the ISC’s stakeholders. In addition to outstanding communication skills, the successful candidate will demonstrate deep understanding of and experience operating in a membership organization, together with proven experience in developing partnerships and securing funding. A passion for science and its contribution to society, high levels of intellectual capacity and emotional intelligence, and a demonstrated commitment to sustainability, equity, diversity and inclusion are essential.

Salary will be by negotiation and commensurate with the responsibilities of the post. The appointed candidate will be primarily located in the Paris office and will be expected to undertake extensive international travel. The employment contract will be subject to French employment law.
