Allan Lavell wins United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction

<p>Allan Lavell, a key member of the community of the ICSU co-sponsored Integrated Research on Disaster Risk programme (IRDR), has been awarded the prestigious prize that is awarded to individuals or institutions that have taken active efforts in reducing disaster risk in their communities and advocated for disaster risk reduction.</p>

Allan Lavell shortlisted for the United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction

<p>Allan Lavell, co-chair of the Assessment of Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (AIRDR) project of the ICSU co-sponsored <a href="https://www.icsu.org/what-we-do/research-programmes/thematic-organizations/integrated-research-on-disaster-risk-irdr">Integrated Research on Disaster Risk programme</a> (IRDR), is one of three nominees for the prize, which is awarded to individuals or institutions that have taken active efforts in reducing disaster risk in their communities and advocated for disaster risk reduction.</p>

International symposium on science assessment and research integrity

<p>Through its <a href="https://www.icsu.org/about-us/governance/committees/committee-on-freedom-and-responsibility-in-the-conduct-of-science-cfrs">Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science</a> (CFRS), the International Council for Science is engaged in the promotion of a responsible conduct of science. In that context, it has been co-sponsoring the three World Conferences on Research Integrity (WCRI) that have taken place since 2007. The Singapore Statement on Research Integrity that resulted from the WCRI in 2010 has become a universally recognised document, laying down fundamental principles.</p>

2015 is the International Year of Light

<p>The International Year of Light, a UN initiative to raise public awareness of the importance of photonics on everyday life, was officially launched at a ceremony at UNESCO in Paris on January 19. Photonics is the science and technology of generating, controlling and detecting photons, or light particles.</p>

International Council for Science announces Dr. Heide Hackmann to be Executive Director and Dr. Lucilla Spini, Head of Science Programmes

<p>Heide Hackmann, a social scientist with extensive experience running international research organizations, will be Executive Director of the Council’s Secretariat from March 2015. Lucilla Spini, a biological anthropologist with experience in international science coordination will take on the newly created role of Head of Science Programmes in early January</p>

More than 1,000 delegates gather in Geneva for talks on global disaster risk reduction agreement

<p>ICSU took part in the second preparatory session for the <a href="http://www.wcdrr.org">Third World Disaster Risk Reduction Conference</a> at the UN in Geneva from Nov 17-18. As the organizing partner of the Science and Technology Major Group, ICSU convened a delegation of more than 20 representatives from Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa drawn from research organizations, ICSU’s IRDR programme and ICSU’s Regional Offices and partner organizations such as the IAP.</p>
