The International Science Council was delighted to continue its partnership with the World Science Forum, this time in Cape Town, South Africa, in December 2022. The ISC was proud to support this partnership with 35 bursaries to African science and researchers to attend the WSF and ISC activities, including the Global Knowledge Dialogue.
About the ISC
The Council convenes the scientific expertise and resources needed to lead on catalysing, incubating and coordinating impactful international action on issues of major scientific and public importance. The Council’s Action Plan forms a practical framework for the ISC’s work until the end of 2024, and to work towards our vision of science as a global public good.
The ISC works at the intersection of science and policy, particularly at the UN level, to ensure that science is integrated into international policy development and that relevant policies take into account both scientific knowledge and the needs of science.
Global Knowledge Dialogue
The Global Knowledge Dialogue is a series of events the ISC is holding through the various regions of the world, starting in Africa at the World Science Forum in 2022 and then in other regions in 2023.
The full day Africa forum on 5 December 2022 consisted of three blocks including:
- The ISC in a Member context: A discussion between the ISC leadership, ISC Fellows, and Members on the strategic and organizational objectives of the ISC for the next five years
- Science in the Global context: Promoting diversity in science and science systems
- The ISC in a regional context: A dialogue to co-design the global voice for science in Africa, specifically looking at key priority areas for strengthening science systems in Africa and the role of an ISC regional focal point.

The ISC at the World Science Forum
The 2022 World Science Forum explored the theme ‘Science for Social Justice’ and considered how principles of social justice should be upheld by science and scientists. The International Science Council took part in the preparations for the event as a partner organization and ISC President Peter Gluckman served as a Member of the conference Steering Committee, and was delighted to have an ISC Delegation, including Board and staff Members, present in Cape Town for the event.
