The Platform is a global multi-stakeholder forum where participants take stock of progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, share new knowledge, exchange best practice and discuss the latest developments and trends in reducing disaster risk.
The eighth session (GP2025) is organized and convened by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) from 2 to 6 June 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland.
At GP2025, the ISC is showcasing the updated Hazard Information Profiles, developed with UNDRR. The 2025 edition offers a science-based overview of 282 hazards, now with stronger multi-hazard framing and improved machine-readability to support risk-informed decision-making.
Update of the UNDRR-ISC hazard information profiles
The UNDRR–ISC Hazard Information Profiles (HIPs) provide a comprehensive, science-based overview of 282 hazards relevant to disaster risk reduction.
This 2025 edition reflects a major shift toward a multi-hazard understanding of risk – recognizing that hazards often interact, cascade, or occur together in ways that intensify their impacts.
The ISC also works with its Affiliated Body Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) to highlight the importance of science-based information in supporting decision-making and practice for resilience.
Policy brief from IRDR
Disaster Risk Reduction Products and Processes: Knowledge Sharing for Place- and Context- Specific Action
The IRDR’s policy brief includes policy recommendations aimed at fostering the development of DRR products and approaches that drive impactful actions. It also calls for the adoption of local science advisory mechanisms to support this development.
The ISC is also co-organizing online and hybrid events at the Platform:
2 June: Implementation of Sendai Framework for DRR: Role of science and technology in advancing implementation at a local level
Date: 2 June 2025
Time: 12:45 – 14:15 CEST (10:45 – 12:15 UTC)
Participation: In person, open invitation
Format: Learning Lab
The purpose of this module is to share and interpret the use of global resources betting UNDRR’s role of supporting Member States to understand and manage risk, revision of HIPS, and review and publication of WiA: National Disaster Risk Assessment.
The focus of the session will be on supporting the participants to frame their questions and use cases and then to facilitate their access and interpretation of the resources on that basis. For participants who do not have a specific query but are interested in discovering how to use the tools, different scenarios will also be proposed.
Facilitators
2 June: Disaster Tracking Systems: understanding losses and damages to better inform DRR and climate action
Date: 5 June 2025
Venue: Vevey Room
Time: 12:45 – 14:15 CEST (10:45 – 12:15 UTC)
Participation: In person, on a first come, first served basis
Format: Learning lab
Building on the experiences of countries on disaster impact data analysis and monitoring, the learning lab will feature first-hand sharing of good practices and common challenges, and re-emphasize the importance of better disaster data and statistics to enable better action.
The learning lab will feature an introduction to the enhanced Disaster Tracking System and how interested countries can utilize for strengthening their capacities to track hazardous events and their impacts and utilize information on losses and damages to understand how to prevent and minimize disaster impacts, identifying, designing and implementing effective measures to minimize, avert and address losses and damages.
Agenda
5 June: From data to action: Strengthening the understanding of disaster impact data and its application in decision-making
Date: 5 June 2025
Venue: Plenary C, CICG
Time: 9:00 – 11:30 CEST (8:00 – 9:30 UTC)
Participation: Hybrid – remote participation is available to those registered for the conference. Live stream will be available to all.
Disaster-related data and statistics are critical to understanding root causes, drivers and impacts of disasters, in order to make informed development decisions.
While the importance of data is widely acknowledged, challenges remain in the application of these data for evidence-based decision-making. This session will unpack the barriers that prevent data from becoming decision intelligence, and promote diverse perspectives on what data governance must look like to enable interoperability, collaboration and effective data-sharing.
ISC Members are invited to submit one slide to showcase their work on disaster-related data and statistics at the event:
6 June: Learning how to use UNDRR’s Risk Understanding Tools: National Disaster Risk Assessment (NDRA) and Hazard Information Profiles (HIPs)
Date: 6 June 2025
Venue: Plenary C, CICG
Time: 12:45 – 14:15 CEST (11:45 – 13:15 UTC)
Participation: Montreux Room, CCV
UNDRR has updated two foundational tools that practitioners use to understand and communicate about risk – “National Disaster Risk Assessment Methods” (NDRA) and the “Hazard Information Profiles” (HiPs). These documents provide an incredibly rich source of tools and methods for users, but their volume can seem daunting.
This Learning Lab will focus on an interactive, user-centred process of identifying the problem, finding appropriate resources, and practice in applying the resources. Experts who participated in the creation of the tools will be on hand to work with participants to explore what is possible and how easy it can be to use these powerful tools to understand the drivers of risk.
This lab session is foreseen as a hands-on exploration with participants. Printed and digital copies of the resources will be available, and a handful of experts will be on hand to meet participants and work with them in small groups to understand how to use the resources and understand risk more completely.
