Call for science writers

The International Science Council (ISC) invites experienced and qualified writers to join its paid roster, contributing to high-quality written materials for international science and policy audiences. Writers will be contracted and compensated for their work on a per-piece or per-word basis, depending on the nature of the assignment.

About the ISC

The ISC works at the global level to catalyse change by convening scientific expertise, advice and influence on issues of major importance to both science and society.

The ISC is an international non-governmental organization with a unique global membership that unites 250 international scientific unions and associations, national and regional scientific organizations including academies and research councils, international federations and societies, and young academies and associations.

Background

The ISC regularly produces news pieces, blogsstrategic reports, briefs, and policy papers aimed at diverse audiences across the science and policy spectrum. The ISC website serves as a platform for sharing insights, contributing to discussions on key scientific issues, and engaging with a broader audience. We publish pieces that bring fresh insights into key scientific debates, science-policy issues, and the broader research landscape.

We are seeking skilled writers to support the ISC in developing these materials.

This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful global conversations at the intersection of science, policy and society.

Services required

This is a freelance, contract-based opportunity. Assignments will be offered on an ad-hoc basis, depending on upcoming projects and communications needs.

The selected candidates will join a pool of approved ISC writers to receive future writing requests.

ISC writing needs vary from news articles and interviews to blogs and brief reports based on ISC initiatives and events.

Required capacities

  • English fluency (native or near-native)
  • Experience writing science-related content for diverse audiences
  • Ability to adapt complex content for diverse audiences
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines under limited supervision

Familiarity with international scientific organizations and global policy contexts is an advantage. Writers must be able to clearly convey complex content and messages in an accessible, policy-relevant way, while preserving technical accuracy, reflecting the ISC’s global perspective and aligning with the ISC’s editorial tone and house style.

Content should use clear, inclusive language, minimize technical jargon where possible, include appropriate referencing (hyperlinked sources), and be consistent in spelling and tone.

Submission guidelines

Interested individuals or agencies are invited to submit an expression of interest, which includes:

  • A brief professional profile (maximum one page), highlighting relevant experience
  • Up to three examples of previous work
  • Per-word or per-piece rates
  • Usual response and delivery times
  • Indication of availability

Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis. There is no set deadline.

Criteria for evaluation

The ISC will assess offers on the following criteria:

  • Writing experience and qualifications
  • Relevance of previous work to the ISC’s areas of work
  • Clarity and quality of past works
  • Reasonable and commensurate rates based on experience and scope of work.

The ISC strongly encourages submissions from writers in low- and middle-income countries.
