Co-designing the science we need for the Ocean Decade

The first webinar in the Ocean Decade virtual series highlighted the importance of building trust - and the need for appropriate funding and incentive structures - to develop the co-designed ocean research required for sustainable development.

What does co-designed, solution-oriented research mean in the context of the Ocean Decade? And how can we foster co-design co-production and co-delivery in ocean research during the Ocean Decade?

These were the guiding questions for a recent webinar convened by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO in partnership with the International Science Council. The webinar brought together experts in trans- and inter-disciplinary research for a wide-ranging discussion drawing on lessons learned from existing research, and looking ahead to how the Decade will promote and facilitate research that is co-delivered and co-designed.

The Ocean Decade Virtual Series contains interactive online dialogues which aim to mobilize the global ocean community and foster transformative partnerships and innovative solution-oriented actions for the Ocean Decade. The second virtual dialogue, which took place on 5 October, focused on the Ocean and Human Health – find out more about the series and access all the recordings on the Ocean Decade website.
