As part of ICSU’s response to the 2014 External Review, the Council in 2016 relaunched its grants programme to foster collaborative science among scientific Unions and for Unions to spearhead high level international initiatives.
The new grants programme is intended to foster membership engagement by addressing long-standing priorities for ICSU members in developing science education, outreach and public engagement activities, and to mobilise resources for international scientific collaboration.
Applications representing collaborations across 58 institutions were received and reviewed by ICSU’s Committee on Scientific Planning and Review (CSPR). A final decision to award was made early 2017 to the following three consortia:
IMU/IUPAC: “A Global Approach to the Gender Gap in Mathematical and Natural Sciences: How to Measure It, How to Reduce It?”
Providing evidence worldwide for informed decisions, including trends on the role of women in science, will provide easy access to materials proven to be useful in encouraging girls and young women to study and work in scientific fields.
IUBS-INQUA: Trans-disciplinary Research Oriented Pedagogy for Improving Climate Studies and Understanding (TROP-ICSU)
Will develop education and science communication modules for future generations, and empowering citizen actions to better equip and identify appropriate solutions for sustainable and equitable development.
IUPAP-IUCr: Utilisation of Light Source and Crystallographic Sciences to Facilitate the Enhancement of Knowledge and Improve the Economic and Social Conditions in Targeted Regions of the World
Will enhance advanced light source and crystallographic sciences in three global regions (Africa, the Middle East, Mexico and Caribbean) by developing a regional plans to grow and enhance understanding of light source techniques and crystallography in these regions.

The ICSU Grants Programme is a competitive, peer-reviewed programme that supports innovative collaborative scientific initiatives of relevance to science and society. The programme seeks to facilitate active collaboration between Scientific Unions and other members of the ICSU community (for example ICSU Regional Offices, Interdisciplinary Bodies, Joint Initiatives, Networks etc).
