Professor Thompson is the International Champion of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), He had previously served as Executive Chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. He was Interim Chief Executive from the December 2015 until the March 2017. Professor Thompson was also the UKRI Champion for Global Challenges Research Fund and the Newton Fund. Professor Thompson was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2021 for services to research.
