Background

Helena Groot de Restrepo is a Colombian microbiologist and geneticist, full professor at the Department of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de los Andes. She is the director of the Human Genetics Laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences, a position held since 1984. Helena focuses her research on the Molecular Epidemiology of cancer, Toxicological Genetics and Environmental Mutagenesis.

Helena Groot de Restrepo is the first female scientist to become President of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences. She currently serves the Colegio Máximo de Academias de Colombia as Vice-president.

Recent recognitions include being marked as a Distinguished Professor at the University of los Andes Bogotá, Colombia in 2023. She also received the status of Honorary Member of the National Academy of Medicine of Colombia in 2023 and Honorary Member of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences in 2021.

Other awards include an Honorable Mention in the “Women of Success 2013″ Science and Technology category and the Aldona Gabriunas Award for Distinguished Teacher in 2011: Life and Work category, Faculty of Sciences, Universidad de los Andes. She is recognized for her outstanding research career over the last 20 years as Director of the Human Genetics Laboratory, Department of Biological Science. She’s acknowledged for “Dedication and valuable contribution to the development of the Department of Biological Sciences”.
