Background

Jean-Jacques Risso was appointed President of the Centre Scientifique de Monaco in March 2025. An engineer in biochemistry (INSA Lyon), he holds a Doctorate of Science (Doctorat d’État ès Sciences, DSc, HDR) in marine physiology from the University of Lyon 1. Since 1980, his career has been dedicated to biophysiological and biomedical research, with a focus on the physiopathological effects of oxygen and inert gases and high-pressure nervous syndrome in deep diving.

He is a researcher at the Centre de Recherche Biophysiologique Appliquée à la Marine, Head of the Research Department at the Institute of Naval Medicine of the French Health Service (IMNSSA), and Head of the Operational Medicine Research Pole of the French Armed Forces Biomedical Research Institute (IRBA). He will continue to lead the Underwater Operational Research Team in Toulon until September 2025. As Co-President of the International High Pressure Biology Group and Vice-President of the Medsubhyp Society, he organised several international congresses on diving medicine and physiology.
