Background

Marie-Francoise Roy, born in 1950, is emerita professor in Rennes, where she has been teaching and conducting research as professor since 1983. She studied at Ecole Normale Superieure de Jeunes Filles and got a thèse d’etat in 1981 at Université Paris Nord where she was teaching. She spent two years at Niamey University (Niger) from 1981 to 1983.

A specialist on algorithms in real algebraic geometry, she wrote two books, several dozens of papers and directed or co-directed 24 PhD students in France, Spain, Niger, Algeria, Sénégal. She had several research collaborators in US, France, Spain, Germany, Argentina and Senegal.

President of Société Mathématique de France from 2004 to 2007, she was a member of the European Mathematical Society council during that period. After serving for several years as scientific officer for Sub-Saharan Africa at Centre International des Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées, she was facilitator of two research projects in Sub-Saharan Africa for the Simons Foundation.  She was awarded the Prix Irène Jolliot-Curie, catégorie Reconnaissance, and  received honorary degrees  from University of Cantabria in 2015 and University of Bath in 2022.
