Dr. Mark C Cesa is a physical organic and organometallic chemist with research interests in catalysis and organic reaction kinetics and mechanisms. He is retired from the chemical industry, most recently with INEOS Nitriles on new catalytic reactions, chemical process optimization, and safety and environmental protection in chemical manufacture and use.
Dr. Cesa was 2014-2015 President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and is Chair of the IUPAC Standing Committee on Ethics, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. He has served the American Chemical Society (ACS) as chair of the Committee on Science and as a member of the Committee on Safety, the International Activities Committee, and the Committee on Ethics. Dr. Cesa is the Deputy Representative from IUPAC and former Treasurer of the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science (SCGES). He has served as Chair of the U. S. National Academies Board on International Scientific Organizations.
Dr. Cesa was named an ACS Fellow in 2012. He earned an A.B. in chemistry from Princeton University (USA) and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in organic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA).
