Dr. Sylvie Tambutté is a marine biologist and the Scientific Director of the Centre Scientifique de Monaco (CSM), a position she has held since January 2025. Her research has focused on coral physiology, with particular expertise in biomineralization and the effects of environmental stressors, such as ocean acidification, on coral health. Over the past 30 years, she and her group have developed an interdisciplinary approach combining cell biology, physiology, and ecology to better understand the functioning and resilience of coral reef ecosystems. She has regularly been invited to chair sessions on coral biology at the International Coral Reef Symposium and to present her work at the prestigious Gordon Research Conferences on Biomineralization.
Before leading the Coral Physiology and Biochemistry team, she held positions within the Monegasque Public Service, notably as Executive Secretary of the RAMOGE Agreement, coordinating environmental protection initiatives in the Mediterranean. She was also appointed by the Government of Monaco as the National Focal Point for the PELAGOS Agreement
As Scientific Director, Dr. Tambutté oversees the coordination of research activities across CSM’s departments in marine biology, polar biology, and medical biology and is actively engaged in international scientific cooperation. She has made significant contributions to the understanding of coral reef science and is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications.
