CFRS concerned by mounting pressures on academic freedom

ICSU supports the independence of the Russian Academy of Sciences

<p>Following recent developments in Russia, including proposed legislation that would threaten the independence of the <a href="http://www.ras.ru/en/index.aspx">Russian Academy of Sciences</a>, ICSU’s <a href="https://www.icsu.org/about-us/governance/committees/committee-on-freedom-and-responsibility-in-the-conduct-of-science-cfrs">Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the Conduct of Science</a> (CFRS) has expressed its support for an independent, merit-based Russian Academy.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://www.researchintegrity.org/3wcri/overview_e.shtml">3rd World Conference on Research Integrity</a> will be held in Montréal, Canada, May 5th to 8th. It focuses on research integrity, responsible conduct of research, and publication of research.</p>

Industry-academia partnerships

<p>In November 2011, more than 50 academic and business leaders came together for 4 days at the <a href="http://destinationsigtuna.se/en/partner/sigtunastiftelsen-sigtuna-foundation/">Sigtuna Foundation</a>, near Stockholm, Sweden. They represented a broad range of disciplines, industries and countries with the common aim of promoting effective partnerships between academia and industry for the greater benefit of society.</p>

Advisory Note on access to shared data to reduce global inequality

<p>A recent Advisory Note of the ICSU <a href="https://www.icsu.org/about-us/governance/committees/committee-on-freedom-and-responsibility-in-the-conduct-of-science-cfrs">Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science</a> (CFRS) aims to help scientists in developing countries contribute effectively to scientific progress and reduce the brain drain of scientists from developing to developed countries.</p>

Global scientific community affirms its shared responsibilities for the integrity of science and its role in society

<p>In the light of recent high profile cases of scientific misconduct, the General Assembly of the International Council for Science (ICSU) today reaffirmed the universal values that should guide the conduct of science. The Assembly also explicitly recognised the key social responsibilities of the scientific community as laid out in a new booklet, which will be made widely available to scientists across the world.</p>

Statement: Promoting the integrity of science and the scientific record

The first World Conference on Research Integrity: Fostering Responsible Research, took place in Lisbon, Portugal in September 2007. Much of the focus was on scientific publications and mechanisms for monitoring and addressing scientific misconduct. There was general agreement that science is, at least in the longer term, self-correcting, and that errors in the scientific record – either inadvertent or deliberate –will eventually be exposed.
