Royal Society Neural Interfaces Summit

We are pleased to invite you to The Royal Society’s Summit on Neural Interfaces, taking place on 13 and 14 September at The Royal Society, in London, United Kingdom.

The event marks four years since the publication of the report on the topic, iHuman. It aims to build on this work by laying the foundations for international governance of neural interface technologies to accelerate responsible development in the field.

The two-day summit will be comprised of sessions on the following topics, opting to employ a range of formats to engage in effective communication and networking opportunities.

Day 1 – Keynote and science and applications of neural interface technologies

• Keynote delivering a brief overview of neural interface technologies for policymakers followed by presentation and discussion of developments of those technologies since the 2019 iHuman report.
• Pre and post lunch topics to include: Medical Devices, Non-Medical Devices & Futures.
• An evening of Lightning Talks from industry and researchers paired with demonstrations leading into a drinks reception and evening food.

Day 2 – How do we maximise the benefits and minimise the risks of neural interface technologies?

• An introduction to the ethical and governance concerns surrounding the advancement of neural interface technologies followed by deep dives into three specific ethical issues
• Discussion of current and future governance, concluding with a facilitated interactive session generating priorities and actions to accelerate responsible development
• Sessions include: Ethics and Governance Keynote; Abandonment, Designing Inclusive Devices; Privacy, Liberty and Neural Interfaces; Governance; Priorities & Actions Generation
