Statement on Open Science

“The international science community has responded with energy and openness to the COVID-19 pandemic by offering and applying its skills in understanding this new disease, evaluating its potential spread, developing diagnostic tests and seeking a vaccine. Our Chinese colleagues have led the way in identifying and characterising the disease and rapidly and openly making those findings available to scientists and public health bodies worldwide through publication in the scientific literature. We applaud their efforts and encourage the Chinese government to maintain their enlightened stance on this threat to global humanity, and not to permit political considerations to disrupt China’s contribution to the global good in this pandemic.”

The ISC’s Vision

The vision of the Council is to advance science as a global public good. Scientific knowledge, data and expertise must be universally accessible and its benefits universally shared. The practice of science must be inclusive and equitable, also in opportunities for scientific education and capacity development.

The ISC’s Mission

The mission of the International Science Council is to act as the global voice for science. As part of that mission, the ISC:

• Speaks for the value of all science and evidence-informed decision-making;
• Stimulates and supports international scientific research and scholarship on major issues of global concern;
• Articulates scientific knowledge on such issues in the public domain;
• Promotes the continued and equal advancement of scientific rigour, creativity and relevance in all parts of the world;
• Defends the free and responsible practice of science.
