The U.S. Department of State initiated a Women in Science Hall of Fame in 2010 to honour outstanding female scientists throughout the Middle East and North Africa. New Hall of Fame members are selected annually for their accomplishments.
Dr Salem is Chair of the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Science, University of Alexandria. She received her Ph. D. from the University of Alexandria jointly with Imperial College, University of London, on land use/land cover changes in arid lands using remote sensing. She spent time as a Post Doctor at the University of London working on Geographic Information Systems Applications, Environmental digital databases and at the University of Maryland, USA (1996) working on Electronic Environmental databases.
Her major field of interest is Remote Sensing and GIS application on arid environments (Land degradation and desertification, land use/cover change detection.); Protected areas and Biosphere Reserves; Modeling of crop production in desert ecosystems; Strategic Environment Assessments and EIA; Electronic Databases and networking; Alternative energy sources (solar).
Dr. Salem is an active member of many international Committees, which includes the British Ecological Society (BES); Joint Jury of the UNESCO Science Prize for development and Javed Husain Prize for Young Scientists. She is National Coordinator of Ground Water and Human Security Project, United Nations University, Bonn and President of Ecosystems and Human Development Association (EHDA). She has won many international Prizes for her work.
