Stockholm, Sweden,
Three research projects that span the globe – as well as scientific disciplines – will be featured at Sida’s Science Days in order to share experiences about how funders, facilitators and researchers can advance transdisciplinary research.
Dr Million Belay, researcher from the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa and participant in the T2S programme, will highlight the challenges of using participatory methodologies for social learning and change, including the institutional support required to carry out this kind of research.
Also from the T2S programme, Dr Iokiñe Rodriguez, senior lecturer at University of East Anglia, will speak to the challenges around the decolonisation of knowledge and advancing greater cognitive justice for indigenous peoples in Latin America.
From the LIRA programme, which just held its annual meeting in Dakar, Senegal in March, Philip Osano, acting director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (Africa) will share his experiences on the benefits of transdisciplinary research and the support needed to advance research outcomes into action across the global south.
Dr Zarina Patel, researcher at the University of Cape Town and fellow LIRA participant, will provide a compelling case for the need of funders and academic institutions to have a cohesive approach to inter- and transdisciplinary research that responds to the different geographical and cultural contexts.
Science Director for the ISC, Dr Mathieu Denis, will also be attending Sida Science Days to address the state of academic freedom at a critical time for science in a world of growing complexity and pressing global challenges. The ISC protects scientific freedom and advocates for the responsible practice of science through its activities and its Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science.
Academic freedom is at the heart of the ISC’s values, along with supporting increased collaboration on the integration of relevant knowledge across national and disciplinary boundaries.
Dr Denis will present on Tuesday 21 May at 08.30 in Stockholm, Sweden.
The inter- and transdisciplinary panel will present on Wednesday 22 May at 10.30.
