World Oceans Day

On World Oceans Day 2020, we're highlighting the ocean science needed to protect our blue planet.

World Oceans Day

Every year, the World Oceans Day on 8 June provides a moment to celebrate the ocean, and focus attention on what’s needed to conserve healthy oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. As a strong supporter of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the ISC is committed to promoting ocean science for global sustainability.

Join members of the ISC Community at the following events on World Oceans Day:

Virtual Ocean Literacy Summit

09:00 – 12:00 UTC
UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission will host the first Virtual Ocean Literacy Summit, in partnership with Ocean Wise, EuroGOOS and Experiential Atelier. The virtual summit will celebrate ocean literacy worldwide, as an essential tool for the transformation of scientific knowledge into action.

This event contributes to the preparatory phase of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). EuroGOOS is part of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), which is co-sponsored by the ISC.
