The German Mathematical Society (DMV – Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung) has launched a worldwide competition among cartoon artists on the occasion of International Day of Mathematics Day (Pi Day 3/14). Searching for the most humorous and sophisticated cartoons to promote mathematics to the public, the DMV will award three outstanding artworks with the Math Cartoon Prize 2022.
The deadline for submissions is August 31, 2022, and the winners will be announced the following month in September. The competition is open to all professional cartoonists, illustrators, and artists worldwide.
The cartoonist in first place will receive a prize of 1000 euros for the best humorous drawing on mathematics, 500 euros for second place, and 250 euros for third place. In addition, up to five honorable mentions can be awarded. The prize money is donated by the DMV.
“With this year’s cartoon prize, we would like to build on the great successes of 2008 and 2013, each of which saw several hundred math cartoons submitted from all over the world.”
Günter M. Ziegler, initiator of the first DMV Cartoon Prize in the Year of Mathematics 2008, DMV board member, and president of Freie Universität Berlin.
