ISC Member, the International Mathematical Union (IMU), is organizing a webinar entitled ‘’Playing with Mathematics for Society’’ for UNESCO on the occasion of the International Day of Mathematics and as an event in the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development.
Established during the General Conference of UNESCO in November 2019, the International Day of Mathematics serves as an opportunity to explain and explore the essential role that mathematics and mathematics education play in breakthroughs in science and technology, in improving the quality of life, in empowering women and girls, and in contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations.
Each year, there is a different theme. The focus in 2024 will be on “Playing with Mathematics for Society”. This year’s theme will address the many ways in which playing with mathematics can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is a very rich theme, as exemplified by the multiple meanings of the verb “play”. In addition to mathematical games, puzzles and other forms of edutainment, this year’s theme is an invitation to play with mathematics itself in order to explore, experiment and make new discoveries.
