Seedbeds of Transformation: the role of science with society and the SDGs in Africa

The conference, organised by Future Earth and its partners, will focus on the transformations needed for Africa to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

It’s an event by Africa for Africa: Designed by researchers and other sustainability leaders on the continent, the Seedbeds conference will explore the transformations needed for Africa to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Seedbeds conference will place a premium on active participation, open dialogue and regional leadership in conception and execution. The event will engage research communities from Africa and beyond in the physical, social and behavioural sciences and humanities. It will also reach out to high-level institutions in the region, such as the African Development Bank, the SDG Centre for Africa, the African Climate Policy Centre and various UN agencies. Representatives from civil society, including from the private sector, non-governmental organisations, faith-based groups, media and green business councils, will participate in the event.

Among other products, participants in the Seedbeds conference will produce a statement of priority actions for research that will support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals. Attendees will also develop a strategy for strengthening networks that are already engaged in transformation efforts in Africa – with the goal of connecting these networks to sustainability targets and identifying new networks and actions that can emerge in the future.
