Colombia, Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (ACCEFYN)

The Academia Colombiana de Ciencias Exactas, Fisicas y Naturales has been a member since 1986.

The Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences was recognized as a consultative body of the Colombian government in 1933 and was officially established in 1936. Since then, it has operated without interruption. The Academy is a private, not-for-profit organization. The main objective of the Academy is the advancement of the Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences in Colombia. The Academy is a merit based organization. Therefore, one of its goals is to recognize those scientists who have contributed to the advancement of science in Colombia. Currently the Academy includes 190 members in three categories: 126 corresponding members, 50 full members and 14 honorary members. In 1936, it began editing its own Journal (Revista de la Academia Colombiana de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales). The Academy also publishes several book collections: scientific books, college textbooks, history of science books, public outreach and memoirs. Each year, it awards two prizes: The Colombian Academy of Sciences Life Achievement Award and The Colombian Academy of Sciences – The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Award for young Colombian scientists.  Areas of particular interest for the Academy include, but are not limited to, History and Phylosophy of Science, Conservation Biology, Protected Areas,  Education at all levels, Women in Science, Nanoscience and nanotechnology, Science outreach, Science policy, etc. These activities are considered of the highest priority for scientific capacity building in the country.
