Alison is originally from Western Australia and joined the ISC as Senior Communications Officer in February 2019 and was appointed Communications Director in April 2020. Her role included developing the ISC communications and outreach strategy, supporting membership engagement and working alongside colleagues on a wide range of ISC projects.
Alison holds a Master of Arts degree in Public Policy and International Law from the American University of Paris and a Programme Certificate in Climate Change Management from the University of Edinburgh. Alison has post-graduate qualifications in Journalism and Education.
Prior to joining the ISC, Alison worked in the Communication and Information sector at UNESCO, Paris, where she oversaw publications such as the Fake News Handbook to combat misinformation, led UNESCO’s International World Radio Day campaign and assisted the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) promoting media development within developing countries, countries in transition, and countries in conflict and post-conflict situations. Alison honed her membership, human rights and journalism skills as Press Freedom Director at the World Association of Newspapers, organizing events such as the Arab Free Press Forum and the Women in News programme. During her time as Public Affairs officer for the British Red Cross, she promoted evidence based policy-making in Stormont, Holyrood and Westminster parliaments on climate and flooding issues, as well as first aid education in schools. She started her career in the labour movement, in Australia and the UK, organizing campaigns in sectors such as nursing, care homes, education, and the food, mining, and airline industries.
