The first Malaysian doctor to gain a PhD in Health Informatics, Awang Bulgiba is also the first public health physician in Malaysia to accumulate these 5 fellowships (FFPH, FPHMM, FAMM, FASc and FISC). He was Secretary-General for the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and Council Member for the Academy of Medicine Malaysia from 2019 to 2023, and Project Director for Malaysia’s National Policy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2021-2030. Awang Bulgiba is a member of the APJPH Editorial Board, the IAP for Urban Health, and several R&D committees.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Awg Bulgiba chaired Malaysia’s Independent COVID-19 Vaccination Advisory Committee and the COVID-19 Epidemiological Analysis and Strategies Task Force. As DVC, he led strategies which resulted in the University of Malaya rising from 151 in 2014/15 to 70 in 2019/20 in the QS World University Rankings.

He was the Malaysian coordinator for the Asia-Europe Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine Programme from 2007 to 2010. He was Organising Chair for the 40th APACPH Conference (2008), 1st APCEEBM Conference (2012) and 3rd APA Conference (2015).

Awang Bulgiba has published extensively and is the lead author for “Strengthening Academic Career Pathways and Leadership Development” and sole author for “Viewpoints During a Pandemic”.
