Background

He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, from October, 2006 to July, 2010.  Before then he was Head of the Department of Anatomy, Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School and, Provost of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana. In addition to serving on the University of Ghana Council, Boards and Committees of the University, Prof. Tagoe has been the chairman of the Vice-Chancellors of the public universities in Ghana.

Professor Tagoe holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MB, ChB) from the University of Ghana and PhD in Anatomy from the University of Leicester, UK.  He has worked at the Korle Bu teaching Hospital and the Coast Central Hospital. He has been external examiner and held visiting lectureships/professorships at medical schools in the Universities of Ibadan and Ilorin, Nigeria, University of Sierra Leone, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana and Tulane University, New Orleans, U.S.A. 

Prof Tagoe has presented papers on topics including ‘Provision and Financing of Higher Education in Africa’, ‘Some Aspects of Intra- and Inter-Regional Cooperation in Africa’ and ‘International Code of Ethics for Higher Education’. He served on the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities; the Administrative Board of the International Association of Universities (IAU); Convenor of Visitation Panel to the University of Dar es Salaam (2011); Chairman of the Board of Vodafone Foundation Ghana and member of the IAU’s Joint Working Group on Ethics in Higher Education. In 2008, the Government of Ghana conferred on him national honours, the Order of the Volta, for services to higher education in Ghana.
