Background

The world faced an unprecedented Pandemic last year that is still ongoing and the disruption of the World Global Economy and Food and Nutrition Security across both rich and poor countries is of great magnitude. The world also awakened to the importance of Food Production and Processing both at the primary and secondary levels for sustainable livelihood using Local solutions for Global replication and also Global Solutions for Local replication. This has set in motion the agenda of the UN World Food Summit main objectives as Food resilience, equity, and sustainability with firm actions and pathways in place at the local levels. Adaptable, accessible, and affordable Food and Nutrition security has to be firmed up with Capacity building and basic infrastructure in place. The translational and transformational actions call for a concerted action plan using all facets of Science and Technology such as Food Science, Nutrition, Biology, Soil Science, Forestry, Fisheries, Information Technology, and Science of Climate Change at large.

With this background, IUFoST and partners see the necessity of interdisciplinary effort and proactive work together to find solutions against the backdrop of Climate Change and its effect on agriculture and on water and energy conservation per unit of food produced from the Farm to the Consumer Plate. This challenge to work together is the agenda that IUFoST wants to table for the various stakeholders through networking with IUFoST and its Fellows of more than 300; the 100 or more countries with which IUFoST interacts; as well as a large number of adhering bodies and food and agricultural industries to ensure safe, secure, sufficient and nutritious food in every marketplace.

The importance of Biodiversity and diversity in Traditional Foods from experience of nearly 3000 years cannot be set aside. At least a few solutions with evidence-based science to stabilize over 270 Million People facing acute Food Security and over 690 Million undernourished as per last world state of food and agriculture is very important upon which to concentrate our focus.

The other side of Nutrition is also the problem of nearly 2 Billion People who are overweight and calls for immediate action as these are the vulnerable populations who are on the verge of NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases) of cardiac-related, diabetes, hypertension, and related chronic illnesses, thus increasing the burden on Health sectors and damaging the health of the society itself. Hence human and planetary health concerns and agenda are important issues for Policy Makers and Food Scientists at large.  IUFoST in particular welcomes other organisations and Stakeholders in their areas of advantage to participate in this discussion to establish linkages to work together and advancing the utility of a Team IUFoST effort focusing on science-based issues and solutions in Food Science and Technology.
