Ethnografilm will return to Paris in 2022 for a festival of non-fiction film

Following two consecutive postponements, a bumper edition of the festival will take place next year.

The Ethnografilm festival, a celebration of non-fiction film-making and the field of video ethnography, which was due to take place in Paris this week, has unfortunately been postponed for a second year in the light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, festival director Wes Shrum remains committed to ensuring the festival runs in April 2022, saying:

We were saddened to postpone Ethnografilm Paris for the second year. Theatres remain closed but we are confident in partnership with the International Science Council going forward. We received dozens of messages from directors around the globe saying they were delighted to hear that we would meet in Paris in April 2022. One said this postponement was an “act of resistance.” That suggests our theme for the next Ethnografilm should be the liberation of Paris at the end of WWII—it will surely be the best festival ever!

Wesley Shrum, Director, Ethnografilm Festival

The Ethnografilm Festival promotes systematic understandings of the social world through film. The Festivals, which have taken place annually in Paris since 2014, serve as a showcase and forum for dialogue between independent and academic filmmakers. They are held at Theatre Lepic in Montmartre, historically the cultural centre of Paris.

Dates for the 2022 Festival will be shared as soon as possible on the Ethnografilm website. The 2020 and 2021 films will be screened at the 2022 Festival, and new submissions will not be possible. The organizers will next open for submissions in June 2022.

The ISC is a partner in Ethnografilm, together with ISC Member The Society for Social Studies of Science (4s) and the journal of Visual Ethnography. Find all of the Festivals’ partners here.
