The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development – the Ocean Decade – is a once in a lifetime opportunity to generate the science we need for the ocean we want.
Held as part of the IUCN World Conservation Congress (3 – 11 September 2021), this event aims to generate discussion and reflection on the role of the Ocean Decade to generate critical ocean knowledge for the global biodiversity ambitions.
Through the lens of major global biodiversity processes it will bring together speakers from science community, philanthropy and the United Nations to explore links and connections between stakeholder groups that can be optimized through the Ocean Decade to contribute to global biodiversity goals.
What is the Ocean Decade?
The UN Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly and was launched on 1 January 2021. Coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, the Ocean Decade is convening actors around the globe to undertake transformative, co-designed ocean science that can contribute to sustainable development solutions and incite systemic and individual behavior change.
