The Global Women’s Breakfast (GWB) was created in 2011 and provided women chemists with the opportunity to join in the International Year of Chemistry, and to celebrate the centenary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Marie Curie. The GWB series was then relaunched in 2019 as an event held jointly to celebrate the Centenary of the founding of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT2019).
In 2019, 2020, and 2021, events were held in more than 50 different countries around the globe, demonstrating the need to build a network of both women and men working together to address the obstacles and inequalities faced by women in science. The July-September Chemistry International, IUPAC’s news magazine, features information gathered from 324 events from 55 countries and a commentary on the impact of GWB.
The International Science Council’s Member IUPAC is in a unique position to serve as a leading organization and global platform where these issues can be addressed in a transparent manner. The IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast (GWB2022) will be held on February 16, 5 days after the United Nations Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Women and men from all types of educational and scientific organizations, from high schools to universities, to scientific societies, government and industry organizations, are invited to organize breakfast events either virtually or in person (per local COVID-19 safety guidelines). Breakfast events can be small or large, formal or casual, and each breakfast team is encouraged to reach out and connect with another team. Since GWB events are designed to be a catalyst for change towards greater diversity in science, event organizers and participants can strengthen their activities by connecting with other events locally, internationally, or across sectors.
