On 16 October from 7:00 – 8:30 a.m. UTC, the ISC leadership will present the recent report Flipping the Science Model: A Roadmap to Science Missions for Sustainability in a virtual session addressed to the ISC membership. The session will provide an opportunity for ISC Member representatives to discuss how to actively engage in a “big science” approach to accelerate the impact of science to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and long-term sustainable development.

The pivotal role of science, technology, and innovation in addressing sustainability challenges is clear. However, achieving meaningful progress necessitates more than scientific advancements; it requires a robust science-policy-society interface that informs decision-making at all levels. To facilitate this, we must embrace a paradigm shift in how we conduct and fund scientific research for sustainability. Recognizing the urgency, the International Science Council (ISC) and its Global Commission on Science Missions for Sustainability have laid out an ambitious transdisciplinary approach to push Agenda 2023 and its Global Goals forward.
Built on the expert advice of international scientists on the Commission’s Technical Advisory Group and launched at the UN’s High-Level Political Forum in New York, the report Flipping the Science Model: A Roadmap to Science Missions for Sustainability calls for a substantial re-investment in science for the public good. Moving away from the traditional, siloed, and competitive models, we need to prioritize the generation of actionable knowledge that leads to practical outcomes.
