The Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Sciences (XMAS) was initiated by the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), Xiamen University in 2014.
2025 Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Sciences (XMAS 2025) will be held from January 14th to 17th, 2025 in Xiamen, China. It is organized by the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), Xiamen University and Department of Earth Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Furthermore, for the first time, the symposium will be sponsored by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO).
XMAS 2025 will consist of interdisciplinary cutting-edged sessions covering physical, chemical, and biological oceanography as well as marine pollution. In addition, workshops on emerging topics in marine environmental sciences such as ocean-based carbon dioxide removal, ocean governance and sustainability, the marine economy, marine education and outreach, and special sessions on Women in Science and mentoring future scientists will also be offered.
XMAS 2025 will be a vibrant and interdisciplinary platform featuring 70 scientific sessions, 2 townhalls, and 6 workshops. The content will cover the core areas of ocean science, including physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, marine pollution, and the interdisciplinary approaches needed to address urgent marine environmental challenges. It will showcase cutting-edge research, innovative solutions, and foster collaborative discussions on topics related to global and regional oceans.
The 70 scientific sessions will cover topics including extreme weather events, marine biogeochemical cycles, ocean deoxygenation, microbial activity, ecological and socio-economic benefits of marine protected areas, and the impact of human activities like plastic pollution. The sessions aim to deepen the understanding of the ocean and climate systems while promoting sustainable solutions through research and cooperation.
The 2 townhalls and 6 workshops will focus on discussions and exchanges in areas such as manuscript writing and reviewing, Women in Science, Education and Outreach, and regional marine ecosystem research.
The Symposium will provide Student Presentation Award, Early Career Scientist Travel Award, Mentor Meets Mentee program, and a series of education and outreach activities.
