It’s no surprise many staff at science organisations are experimenting with generative AI, given their situation and its promise.

But managing people using generative AI in their work isn’t easy. It may present an opportunity for them to innovate, increase their impact, expand their reach, and better serve stakeholders. But its use also creates risks. Organizational managers and leaders must answer some complex questions to be able to balance the potential of AI with its risks:

  • How to manage staff who have different abilities or show different levels of interest in using generative AI.
  • How to ensure responsible and ethical use of generative AI, and maintain human connection, judgment and alignment with their values.
  • How to understand the costs associated with AI adoption.
  • How to develop principles and guidelines to oversee use of AI.

A workshop to support managers and leaders in science organisations

The International Science Council has, since 2022 been actively supporting its members in their journeys to digital maturity. This 1.5 hour workshop continues that process, supporting managers and leaders at the organizational level as they engage with AI and how it can be used by their staff and stakeholders.

The workshop aims to:

  1. Develop a shared understanding of AI and its relevance to the standard work of organisations.
  2. Explore the implications of AI use on management, operations, services, culture and stakeholders.
  3. Identify current and potential AI use cases among staff in organisations like science organisations.
