The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is pleased to invite you to the Science Diplomacy Symposium on Transboundary Nile Water Management taking place on 24-25 October 2024 in a hybrid format, both online and at the Academy.
The Nile River plays a vital role in the livelihoods, culture, and economies of millions of people across Africa. However, its transboundary nature has led to long-standing disputes. This event seeks to demonstrate how Science Diplomacy can be harnessed to resolve transboundary water disputes among the Nile Basin countries.
Scientists and experts will convene to explore the potential of independent scientific evidence in supporting public decision-making. This scientific and interdisciplinary symposium aims to create a platform for raising awareness, presenting evidence-based research, sharing best practices, and fostering dialogue on the environmental, economic, social, and cultural dimensions of Nile water use.
The African Academy of Sciences believes that through Science Diplomacy, a peaceful and lasting solution can be achieved. By bringing together national academies and scientists from the Nile Basin countries and abroad, this symposium will focus on presenting and discussing scientific solutions to the water use challenges, with the goal of fostering cooperation and ensuring the sustainable management of the Nile’s resources.
This symposium is co-organized by the African Academy of Sciences and the European Commission.
