Since 2014 the International Science Council has collaborated with Ethnografilm, an annual festival of nonfiction films that occurs each April in Paris. The 2025 festival will feature, for the second year, a one day workshop on science filmmaking. This will be held on the afternoon of Monday, the 21st of April and following morning of the 22nd, immediately following the 2025 edition of Ethnografilm. The objective is to provide scientists with the resources to make short movies featuring their own scientific research!
All ISC members are invited to nominate participants, and ISC Fellows are encouraged to apply. There is no registration fee and no charge to scientists for attendance. (1) Transportation, lodging, and meals must be covered by the nominating ISC Member or self-funded by ISC Fellows, and (2) Participants should attend the film festival April 17-20th prior to the workshop.
The workshop will be taught by a team of experienced ethnographic filmmakers including the Ethnografilm festival directors. Topics will include conceptualizing, shooting, editing, and finishing a movie. Following the workshop, scientists should make a short film about their research during the course of 2025. Workshop instructors will provide encouragement and remote assistance to participants during their filming and editing process. Films will also be posted on the web site of the International Science Council.
Ethnografilm will be held at Le Club de L’Etoile, a classic Parisian theatre just across the Arc de Triomphe from the International Science Council, which will be the venue for the workshop itself.
The application may be submitted by email to [email protected] by an officer or representative of the relevant ISC member, or by an ISC Fellow, by 31 December 2024. The application should include the name, contact information, and a paragraph describing the scientist’s primary research area(s). Self-nominations should include mention of the discipline or Union affiliation of the scientist.
