This year, the United Nations celebrates the 8th annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) since its establishment in 2015. In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, IDWGS is aimed at advancing equality in science, technology and innovation and at recognizing the critical role women and girls play in these fields.
On this important day, the International Science Council acknowledges its Affiliated Member, the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and their global programmes empowering women scientists throughout the developing world at different stages in their careers.
OWSD recently announced the cohort of 25 women scientists who have been granted the 2022 Early Career Fellowship. These scientists will receive up to US$50,000 to lead research projects and establish research groups at their home institutions, with the aim of maintaining an international standard of research and attracting collaborating scholars from all over the world.
The fellowship programme supports outstanding women scientists to lead important research projects in countries that have been identified as especially lacking in scientific and technological resources. The flexible grant pays special attention to the challenges that women researchers face and can be used to set up laboratories and purchase equipment, hire MSc students and technicians, invite international speakers, produce webinars and develop training programmes, as well as establish connections with industry. Meet all the 2022 Early Career fellows on the OWSD website.
The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) are organizing a dedicated event for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on the 10th of February 2023. The event “Where are the Women in Science?” will include a showcase of short-films followed by a panel discussion. This event aims to promote discussion around the role of women in science, highlighting success stories and sharing actionable solutions that increase women’s leadership, voices and representation in science systems. It will take place in ICTP’s Budinich Lecture Hall located in Trieste, Italy, on 10 February, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET.
