Scientific communication: Join the Ethnografilm festival for a filmmaking experience in Paris

Join the Ethnografilm festival in Paris for a unique opportunity to enhance your scientific communication through filmmaking from March 29 to April 1, 2024. The festival’s final day will feature an exclusive filmmaking workshop, providing expert assistance to help you bring your scientific narrative to life.

Originating from Professor Wesley Shrum’s background as a sociologist, the decision to delve into filmmaking stemmed from the belief that certain aspects are better conveyed visually than verbally. This realization led him to discover a growing interest among academics in visual storytelling. As an officer of the International Visual Sociology Association (IVSA), he finds it imperative to champion scientific filmmaking, utilizing the medium to disseminate knowledge about the process and content of science.

A decade ago, with support from the International Science Council (formerly the International Social Science Council), his team launched Ethnografilm in Paris. Distinguished as one of the top 100 festivals by FilmFreeway, they showcase over one hundred movies by academic and documentary filmmakers each April – the only festival worldwide with a special category dedicated to academic films.

Now, they are excited to introduce a new program for ISC-affiliated scientists. After attending the 2024 Ethnografilm festival, participants will engage in a one-day ISC workshop on scientific filmmaking. The workshop will cover essential aspects such as equipment, shooting, and editing. Subsequently, experienced presenters will provide guidance throughout the year as you work on your film project, culminating in a short film to be screened at the 2025 festival. This film will also serve as a valuable tool for personal use, funding opportunities, and research dissemination.

Ethnografilm focuses on fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. Participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and meals, while Ethnografilm will provide training and ongoing support leading up to the 2025 festival.

To apply, send a one-paragraph application to shrum@lsu.edu, including your contact information, ISC affiliation, and a brief overview of your research by the deadline of December 31, 2023.
