Working group 2 of the Transition Team, co-chaired by Peter Liss and Rik Leemans, met from July 11-13 at the ICSU secretariat in Paris to develop recommendations for the institutional design and governance framework of Future Earth.
The group had intense work sessions over three days to explore options regarding the management of Future Earth integrated research, mechanisms to embed dialogue and co-design with stakeholders at all levels, and requirements for Future Earth to develop successfully at regional and national levels. Recommendations were developed on the basis of the principle that Future Earth will provide a home for existing and future research endeavours on global environmental change and sustainability, foster fundamental as well as innovative research, and embed far-reaching collaboration across knowledge systems and sectors to produce the knowledge needed for action.
The extensive written contributions from the meeting are forming the core of Working Group 2’s recommendations to be discussed at the next Transition Team meeting in Paris on 20-21 of September. This preparatory work will be taken forward over the coming six months through a number of consultations with the global change research and knowledge user communities to ensure that the institutional framework for the initiative can effectively deliver Future Earth’s vision.
