The International Cartographic Association became a Full International Scientific Union Member at the 31st General Assembly of the International Council for Science (ICSU), bringing the total number of Scientific Unions to 32.
The mission of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) is to promote the disciplines and professions of cartography and GIScience in an international context.
Founded on 9 June 1959, in Bern, Switzerland, the association brings together researchers, government mapping agencies, commercial cartographic publishers, software developers, educators, earth and environmental scientists, as well as those with a passion for maps. The president is Georg Gartner.
