The ISC leads together with the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) the UN Scientific and Technological Community Major Group (STC MG) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a mission to promote science and to strengthen the scientific basis of decision-making and governance of sustainable development.
As part of its mandate, the STC MG compiles and presents every year a position paper to the annual High-level Political Forum (HLPF), the annual intergovernmental platform where countries report on and review progress towards the SDGs. The position paper is included in the official documentation of the HLPF and is primarily directed towards UN Members States and their Permanent Missions.
The upcoming 2024 HLPF themed “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions”, will take place from Monday, 8 July, to Wednesday, 17 July 2024. The Forum will review several SDGs, including SDG 1 on poverty and inequality, 2 on hunger and food security, 13 on climate change mitigation, 16 on promoting peaceful societies, and 17 on partnerships for the SDGs.
Aligned with the focus of the 2024 HLPF, this year’s position paper aims to bring forward policy-relevant and evidence-based insights to accelerate SDG progress. The position paper will therefore seek to present a set of concise, impactful and science-based key messages on SDG implementation. These messages can pinpoint policy interventions, transformation pathways, and science-driven strategies aimed at accelerating progress towards one or several SDGs.
Additionally, we are seeking your contributions in the form of case studies showcasing the successful applications of science in shaping decision-making and informing action to support SDG implementation within specific contexts. These case studies should exemplify ‘science in action’, while also highlighting interactions across multiple SDGs to illustrate synergies and trade-offs.
Your contributions will be crucial for enhancing the depth and breadth of our position paper, which will serve as an important resource reflecting the collective voice of the S&T community to inform discussions at the upcoming HLPF. All selected contributors will receive due acknowledgment.
