Background

Jones Fairfax Agwata is currently Associate Professor of Environmental Science at the School of Agriculture, Environment and Health Sciences, Machakos University in Kenya. He earned his PhD degree in Environmental Science in 2005 from Kenyatta University where he had joined as an academic in 1993. In 2010, he joined the University of Nairobi’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy as a Senior Lecturer after which he moved to Machakos University as Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences in 2019. He currently serves as Director of the University’s Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer Directorate where he coordinates and oversees all research, innovation and technology transfer activities. He also serves in various strategic committees in the University.

Prof. Agwata’s broad academic, professional and research interests include environmental science and policy, climate change, disaster management, environmental assessment, water resources management, environmental resources use conflicts, conflict management, project management and waste management. He serves as a consultant with the World Bank and as a Lead consultant facilitator and trainer at various national and international Institutions and Organizations. He has participated in several research projects as part of a team and published several journal articles and book chapters besides attending and participating at various conferences and workshops nationally and internationally.

Prof. Agwata holds membership at the Kenya National Academy of Sciences, the International Society for Development and Sustainability, Japan; International Association of Hydrological Sciences, UK; Kenya DAAD Scholars Association; Environment Institute of Kenya and the Kenya Bureau of Standard’s Disaster Management, Environmental Management and Higher Education Services Technical Committees.
