Osvaldo Luiz Leal de Moraes

Osvaldo holds a Bachelor and PhD (1989) in Natural Sciences at the Federal College of Rio Grande do Sul. Director of the Department of Climate and Sustainability at the MCTI. He is a full professor at the Federal College of Santa Maria (UFSM). He was Director of the National Center for Monitoring and Alerting of Natural Disasters – CEMADEN (2015-2023). He is Chairman of the Standing Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction of the World Meteorological Organization. From 2009 to 2011 he was Scientific Director of the Research Foundation of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (FAPERGS) and from 2011 to 2013 he was Director of the Brazilian Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (CPTEC). He was Director of Research and Development Policies and Programs at the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) (2014-2015), Scientific Director of the Brazilian Meteorological Society (2012-2015), Coordinator of the Advisory Committee on Environmental Sciences of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) (2008-2009), Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Physics (1994-1996) and the Graduate Program in Meteorology (2002-2004) at the Federal College of Santa Maria (UFSM). He has supervised more than 30 MSc and PhD students and published almost 100 articles in scientific journals.
