Why 2018 is a big year for global environmental assessments

<p>From oceans to pollination to our continued struggle against our carbon addicted societies, have you ever wondered what drives the appearance of these headlines in our news feeds? As the International Panel on Climate Change prepares to mark its 30th anniversary a central achievement has been to put climate change high on the public agenda. But how many know what the IPCC is and what it does? The IPCC is just one of the so-called global environmental assessments that bring together the best scientific knowledge for a policy audience via the collective efforts of thousands of volunteer scientists and the world’s governments. As 2018 rolls around we look at why it will be a big year for these global environmental assessments.</p>

Heide Hackmann recieves award for science diplomacy

<p>At the 2017 annual South African Science Forum, held in Pretoria from 7-8 December, ICSU Executive Director Heide Hackmann received an award for her role in the merger of the Council and the International Social Science Council, which was regarded as strengthening international science for multilateral decision making. The award was presented by Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor.</p>

IAMAS urges United States to continue support of Earth Observation systems

<p>At the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) Scientific Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa, in August 2017 the IAMAS Executive Committee approved the following resolution regarding the need for continuation and enhancement of Earth Observation systems to monitor the atmosphere, ocean and other elements of the Earth system.</p>

INGSA-Africa Chapter Holds Pre-AMASA 13 Learning Collaborative Workshop in Abuja, Nigeria.

<p>A 2-day Learning Collaborative Workshop designed to inform participants on science advice for policy making at all levels of government was held in Abuja, Nigeria from 13 to 14 November 2017. Coordinated by the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) in collaboration with the Africa Chapter of the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA-Africa), the workshop brought together participants mainly from various Academies of Science in Africa and grantees of the Sida-funded ICSU programme on Leading Integrated Research for Agenda 2030 in Africa (LIRA 2030).</p>

19th Meeting of the ICSU Regional Committee for Africa held in Durban, South Africa

<p>The ICSU Regional Committee for Africa (ICSU RCA) held its 19th meeting in Durban, South Africa from 19 to 20 September 2017. The meeting which was attended by all but two members, reviewed and made input into the proposed programmes and activities of the ICSU Regional Office for Africa for the last half of the financial year ending March 2018.</p>
