Jenny Baeseman appointed SCAR Executive Director

<p>Dr Jenny Baeseman has just been hired as the new Executive Director of the <a href="http://www.scar.org">Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research</a> (SCAR). Baeseman has been the Executive Director of the <a href="http://www.climate-cryosphere.org">WCRP Climate and Cryosphere</a> (CliC) project since 2012 and previous to that was the Founding Director of the <a href="https://www.apecs.is">Association of Polar Early Career Scientists</a> (APECS).</p>

Call for Applications: The SCOSTEP Visiting Scholar (SVS) program

<p>Applications are invited to the SCOSTEP Visiting Scholar (SVS) program, a new capacity building activity of SCOSTEP (the <a href="https://www.icsu.org/what-we-do/research-programmes/thematic-organizations/scientific-committee-on-solar-terrestrial-physics-scostep">Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics</a>). The objective of the SVS program is to provide training to young scientists and graduate students from developing countries in well-established solar terrestrial physics laboratories, for periods of between one and three months.</p>

Allan Lavell wins United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction

<p>Allan Lavell, a key member of the community of the ICSU co-sponsored Integrated Research on Disaster Risk programme (IRDR), has been awarded the prestigious prize that is awarded to individuals or institutions that have taken active efforts in reducing disaster risk in their communities and advocated for disaster risk reduction.</p>

International symposium on science assessment and research integrity

<p>Through its <a href="https://www.icsu.org/about-us/governance/committees/committee-on-freedom-and-responsibility-in-the-conduct-of-science-cfrs">Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science</a> (CFRS), the International Council for Science is engaged in the promotion of a responsible conduct of science. In that context, it has been co-sponsoring the three World Conferences on Research Integrity (WCRI) that have taken place since 2007. The Singapore Statement on Research Integrity that resulted from the WCRI in 2010 has become a universally recognised document, laying down fundamental principles.</p>

Global Sustainable Development Goals need clearer, more measurable targets, according to new report from science experts

<p>According to a new report released today by the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the SDGs offer a “major improvement” over their predecessors, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). However, the report finds that of the 169 targets beneath the 17 draft goals, just 29% are well defined and based on the latest scientific evidence, while 54% need more work and 17% are weak or non-essential.</p>
