Dr. Silvia L. Vilches leads and researches community-based parenting and outdoor play programs, and is a Tuning in to Kids parenting program trainer, supporting social-emotional family attunement. As an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist at Auburn University, she has a special interest in gender and marginalized and rural communities, and conducted her postdoctoral term on the experiences of low-income mothers (Sociology, Simon Fraser University).
She lead an embedded case study of health leadership at Royal Roads University in partnership with the Canadian Consortium of Health Leaders, and works to enhance the capacity for community leaders, scholars and scientists to beneficially interact together.
Dr. Vilches served on the board of the Canadian Association of Postdoctoral Scholars, including as Chair, between 2012-2016 and is currently Vice-Chair of the ICoRSA. Her doctorate is in urban planning (The University of British Columbia), her MA in multidisciplinary policy and practice (School of Child and Youth Care, University of Victoria), and her BA in Psychology (University of Victoria). She lives and works in the traditional territories of the Alabami, Choctaw and Creek peoples of the Southeastern US.
