This is the third of six social media training modules to be delivered over 2024-2025 designed specifically designed for International Science Council Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific Members to build capability in science communication, improve digital storytelling and use of social media platforms. Agenda:

  • Content types: Crafting different types of content—blogs, infographics, video abstracts—to explain complex scientific ideas.
  • Visual storytelling: Utilizing visuals, diagrams, and animations to enhance understanding and recall.
  • Writing for social media: Techniques for writing clear, concise, and engaging posts.
  • Amplifying reach: Strategies for leveraging hashtags, keywords, and collaborations to extend content reach.

Speaker: James Fitzgerald

James Fitzgerald is Programme Director for Social Media Knowledge (SMK), a global EdTech business specializing in digital marketing and communication capability transformation. Now based in Australia, James possesses a wealth of social media experience, having founded two of the UK’s hottest social media knowledge businesses, The Social Media Academy and Social Media Library.

Established in 2010, SMK has educated thousands of decision-makers on how they can optimize and enhance their digital communications, including leaders and teams from Apple, Air NZ, Sanitarium, UNICEF, Ralph Lauren, News Corp, GM, Flight Centre, Tourism Australia & HSBC, to name just a few.

Q&A: Dr. Ru Somaweera

Dr. Ru Somaweera is the Lead for Ecology at Stantec Australia and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Murdoch University, dedicated to popularizing science for a broader audience. A National Geographic Explorer and author, Ru excels at bridging the gap between scientific research and the general public through engaging social media content, mainstream media appearances, books, public talks, and workshops. As part of the STEM Professionals in Schools program, he inspires the next generation of biologists by raising awareness about ecological issues. Ru also lends his expertise as a technical expert to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the United Nations (UN), advocating for science-based solutions to global challenges.
