Conference Aims
The first conference in June 2022 generated a report with seven key recommendations to support academics, researchers, students, and higher education and science systems affected by conflict. This March as the war unfortunately continues, gaining intensity, we look to highlight the need for ongoing support to the Ukrainian higher education and scientific communities via this conference and associated activities. The conference aimed to mobilize the scientific community to critically examine the surge of protection and support efforts during the past year and assess ways forward for enhanced support and post-conflict reconstruction.
The first day included a series of plenary and panel sessions around the impact of the war on Ukraine’s higher education and science sector, a review of the 2022 responses to support the sector and reflection on increasing its resilience to crises. Dr. Serhiy Shkarlet, Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science opened the discussions with a keynote speech.
The second and third days of the conference included two focused sessions hosted by partner organizations examining professional development on research management & European integration (organized by Science Europe and the National Research Foundation, Ukraine), and the potential opportunities of scientific diasporas for continued international collaboration (organized by the Council of Young Scientists of Ukraine). Both sessions would be of particular interest for individuals looking to develop their international scientific career and expanding scientific cooperation.

📣 The meeting focused on supporting and managing grant-funding scientific research during ongoing humanitarian emergencies and conflict contexts. It will bring together the perspectives of Ukrainian and European stakeholders and institutions to investigate ways to support the Ukrainian research system and develop state-of-the-art practices and processes to manage national and European funding effectively. It comprised of two sessions, with high-level speakers from the European Commission, the Ukrainian government, and world-leading research funders and performers.

👥 Host: The Council of Young Scientists, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine
📣 Discussion of potential opportunities of scientific diasporas for Ukrainian scientists, both in Ukraine and abroad. Ukrainian scientists interested in expanding international cooperation and developing an international scientific career were invited to the event.

Шановні колеги!
Міжнародна наукова рада (ISC) та Європейська федерація академій наук (ALLEA) запрошують вас взяти участь у Другій конференції, присвяченій кризі в Україні «Рік війни в Україні: визначення впливу на сектор науки та ініціатив на його підтримку». Конференція відбудеться 20-21 березня 2023 року в онлайн форматі. Реєстрація участі в заході розпочнеться приблизно в середині лютого (інформація буде доступна на веб-сайтах ISC та ALLEA).
За результатами Першої конференції, що відбулася в червні 2022 року, було підготовлено звіт із ключовими рекомендаціями щодо підтримки вчених, дослідників, студентів, закладів вищої освіти та науки, що постраждали від конфлікту. У той час, коли війна, на жаль, триває в умовах зростаючої ескалації, ця конференція та пов’язані з нею заходи покликані підкреслити необхідність постійної підтримки наукової та академічної спільноти України. Конференція має на меті мобілізувати наукове співтовариство для критичного аналізу зусиль із захисту та підтримки, які надавалися протягом останнього року, та оцінити подальші шляхи посилення підтримки та постконфліктної реконструкції та відновлення.
Програма першого дня конференції включатиме декілька пленарних та панельних сесій. Протягом другого дня заплановано серію більш поглиблених заходів, організованих партнерськими організаціями.
